Brilliant and buoyant, Dummy's sophomore album Free Energy (their second for the excellent Trouble In Mind label) bursts at the seams with dazzling hooks and freewheeling yet meticulously considered songcraft. Tracks like "Nullspace" and the cheekily-titled "Soonish..." dare you to sit still, while more contemplative cuts like "Dip In The Lake" and "Psychic Battery" conjure a cool-color-spectrum swirl of tender melodies and swaying synths. Using a broad Technicolor palette of sounds mined from the best of ambient, shoegaze, and touches of Madchester-era acid-tinged psych-pop, Dummy has created a bright, bubbling musical world that is inviting, innovative, and all their own.
