“May your wheels stay on the ground.”

This offhand bit of parting poetry, granted to Ella Williams by a gas station attendant while out on the road a few years back, became a mantra for Williams, guiding her through a treacherous snowstorm on the way from Boston to the Hudson Valley in winter of 2025 and ultimately inspiring her latest single, “Wheels.” Released earlier this March and featuring honeyed harmonies by Billie Marten and Maya Bon of Babehoven, “Wheels” is quintessential Squirrel Flower: quietly smoldering, warmly familiar, with plainspoken lyrics belying an unfathomable well of yearning.

According to Williams’s Substack, the song was recorded at midnight in a makeshift recording studio in Door County, WI; this dreamy spontaneity swirls in and around the music, weaving its way through the laid-back drums, dive-bar-neon-drenched guitars, and the rich trio of voices recalling another legendary Trio.

After touring on her own for the past couple years, Williams is back with a full band for a new round of Squirrel Flower dates (and perhaps the promise of more gorgeous new music on the horizon).

With support from the Bay Area’s Sour Widows and LFK’s own Faith Maddox.
